The range of opportunities JustPeople can offer potential volunteers is dynamic and changes depending on what’s happening in the local criminal justice sector.
There is always something exciting and challenging to get your teeth into and the kind of role you do will depend on what you want to get out of volunteering.
Surrey and Sussex
We are currently recruiting for Volunteer Mentors to provide support to offenders/ex-offenders through coaching, mentoring and befriending to encourage full integration and to prevent social exclusion. This work will be carried out in conjunction with the Surrey and Sussex Probation Trust. Email justpeople@prisonadvice.org.uk for an application pack or call Barbara on 020 7091 1293 for further details.
South West
Here is a range of the roles we have recently offered to JustPeople volunteers in the South West:
• Community-based mentoring with women offenders or women at risk of offending, (see our recent news story about this scheme)
• Providing one to one assistance for offenders in probation workshops and literacy classes
• Carrying out research and gaining service-user feedback for statutory agencies such as Probation
• Providing information, advice and guidance to offenders and their families at local magistrate courts
• Providing transport for offenders with physical or mental disabilities, or those living in rural communities with no other means of transport, to enable them to attend appointments
• Teaching the drums to offenders in a local prison (read Jon’s story)
• Co-facilitating self-development courses in prisons.
We are currently recruiting for the following roles:
Lead Volunteers
Volunteer Administration Assistant
Volunteer Newsletter Co-ordinator
London
We are recruiting for a few specific projects at the moment:
We are looking for volunteers for one of our new projects, Freshstart, working in conjunction with the London Housing Foundation. Freshstart bridges the gap between prisoners and families, and prison and communities, creating a more integrated and joined up service. It aims to reduce the number of prisoners whose housing breaks down by expanding the project to work with families in their homes and communities. You must live within a reasonable commuting distance of either HMP Pentonville or HMP Wandsworth to be eligible. Contact Barbara (Volunteering Coordinator) on 020 7091 1293 for further information.
Basic Caring Communities is a Pact project which aims to support ex-offenders in the community and is open to volunteers from a Christian faith background only, so if you are interested, please contact Maggie (BaCC Manager) on 07976 284 355.
