Volunteering in prison

What can I do?

In the last year JustPeople volunteers have:

  • given vulnerable women access to support services that prevent them from turning to crime,
  • helped ex-offenders turn their lives around through mentoring and other probation support
  • taught prisoners new skills that make their time in prison more constructive,
  • played with prisoners’ children to make their visits less stressful and helped them bond with their parents

Why volunteers are so valuable

Volunteers can transform communities with their efforts. Volunteers come with many different ages, backgrounds, life-experiences and education, they come from all walks of life with reasons for offering their time and commitment. They may complement the work of paid staff whilst bringing their own ideas or knowledge.

As a volunteer in the criminal justice system, you can play a major part in helping to make our communities safer to live in.

What can JustPeople do for you?

Whether you are studying or if you are trying to enhance your career prospects, we can offer you training and a diverse range of volunteering roles to help you develop your skills.

Once you begin your volunteering, our trained coordinators will provide ongoing support and guidance. They can work with you to plan your progress towards specific roles or to develop particular skills.

All our volunteers are insured to carry out their roles, and out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.

What’s involved?

The recruitment process is a two-way process – you need to be confident that this is the right path for you, as much as we need to be sure we are recruiting the right people for the roles we offer. Therefore there is a selection process which includes an interview and two days’ training.

After this we will decide whether we can find a suitable role for you and you can decide if this is the right path for you. When you are allocated a volunteering position you will probably be invited to attend an induction and further training.

What kind of training will I receive?

Our two day foundation training has been developed in conjunction with Devon and Cornwall Probation Trust and CLINKS.

JustPeople training will provide you with an introduction to the criminal justice system and some of the background and reasons why people offend. The training will also familiarise you with some of the skills you will need to work effectively with offenders, victims and families of offenders. Once you start volunteering, you may also receive further training specific to the role.
